It is very common in France<\/strong> to celebrate this day around a good Galette<\/strong>. Do you know the meaning of this tradition ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This feast, which dates to\u00a0antiquity<\/strong>, is systematically celebrated in France on\u00a0the second Sunday after Christmas since 1802<\/strong>. Various customs are celebrated in many countries, but in France, Belgium, and Switzerland the tradition is to share a\u00a0Galette des rois.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

At the beginning, the Galette des rois would come from the\u00a0Saturnalia<\/strong>, a Roman custom celebrating the god Saturn and the sun. The tradition was to share a meal between\u00a0masters and slaves<\/strong>, and for dessert a\u00a0cake or most of the time, a Galette<\/strong>, with a\u00a0shape and color<\/strong>\u00a0of a cake reminded of the\u00a0sun<\/strong>. Inside of it hides a\u00a0feve<\/strong>\u00a0(bean or a whole almond). The one who gets the slice with the feve is named king of the feast.<\/p>\n

The celebration of the Galette des Rois<\/strong> continued after the Chirstianization, coinciding since then, with the arrival of the wise men in front of the cradle of Jesus.<\/p>\n

The current galette made of puff pastry and frangipane only appeared at the end of the 17th century. You can find it now in different shapes and different flavours, with a little figurine<\/strong> of all shapes replacing the bean, and a cardboard crown to put on the head of the one who gets the feve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It takes about 30 minutes to bake your galette.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in a\u00a0vegan version,<\/strong>\u00a0you can simply\u00a0replace<\/strong>\u00a0the 2 eggs and the\u00a0butter<\/strong>\u00a0with 1\/4 cup of\u00a0vegetable cream<\/strong>\u00a0of your choice (at best almond cream) and 2 tablespoon of\u00a0cornstarch<\/strong>. For the gilding, 4 teaspoons of\u00a0vegan cream and 10 ml of agave syrup<\/strong>\u00a0will do the trick!<\/p>\n
