International Wine Challenge Sommelier

The fifth annual Sommelier Challenge wine competition, staged the last weekend of September in San Diego, had a decidedly international flair. A glance at the top awards confirms as much.
The Sommelier Challenge brought together 16 certified sommeliers from around the nation to evaluate a record total of 898 wines at a “blind” tasting in which the identity of the producer and the name of the wine was concealed until after awards had been assigned. The somms were divided into panels and each panel tasted approximately 130 wines, sending its favorites on to the championship round where best of class and best of show awards were determined.
We’re thrilled to announce that many our wines submitted for the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition received platinum, gold and silver honors! The best is that we got the price : Winery of the Year and 2 prices for your favorite wine : Arrogant Frog Lily Pad Red 2012 and Savvy Sauvignon Blanc 2012.

A great article about Arrogant Frog Wine from Rebekah – PdxFoodLove living, eating, writing, (everything about food) in Portland :

« We celebrated with a lovely al fresco lunch of caprese sandwiches, pickled vegetables and a green salad out of the garden with a pomegranate vinaigrette. We tasted the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay, and I have to say, I enjoyed them both.

My favorite of the two was the Chardonnay. It was just so light and refreshing in the summer sun. It seems like it’s hard to find a good Chardonnay that is below a certain price point and there is nothing more disappointing than a bad, syrupy white wine (It seems to me that bad white wine turns a lot of people into only red wine people). This one was nothing of the sort – it was really pleasant. We also enjoyed it with pesto, veggie and ricotta pizza for a dinner outdoors with friends. »

« None of us had tasted Arrogant Frog previously and were all impressed with both the white and red. Especially at $10 a bottle retail! We ended up doing a kind of mix and match with the wines during dinner. Some preferred red, some the white.

For dessert – chocolate-brandy-ganache injected figs dipped in chocolate. Thank you Tracy! These went beautifully with the Lily Pad Noir. »

« Arrogant Frog wine is an excellent deal. It retails for about $8 a bottle and is a great addition to any simple dinner. The chardonnay boasts nice tropical fruit and floral flavors. It’s not terribly oaky like some chardonnays can be and it is very drinkable. This dish is light and perfect for summer with bold flavors from in-season tomatoes and olives. All you really need is a hunk of bread, but pasta would be a great accompaniment as well. »

« Arrogant Frog. If the boldly playful name doesn’t grab you, the art on the label just might. This is a French wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Keeping to that theme, this wine flashes bright gold in the glass. Its aromas continue the party atmosphere with tropical floral notes and ripe peaches. This wine is predominately made from Chardonnay grapes, with a solid flavor profile that is tempered by the rather exotic and aromatic contribution of Viognier grapes. Making this a fun wine to drink. The price point makes this a terrific party wine too. It drinks well all on its own and has enough assertive acidity to sip easily with whatever food comes your way. I chose to let its fruity nature stand out by pairing it with a simple dish of steamed mussels with fries. Moules Frites. »
